Landscape Design-Build · Ottawa, IL

Outdoor spaces, drafted before they are built.

Patios, retaining walls, plantings, and full-yard design across the Illinois Valley. Eighteen years drawing plans that actually get installed.

Joe Simmons, designer and founder. Ottawa, IL.

Hand-drafted isometric site plan illustration in blueprint-blue ink on parchment cream, showing a residential backyard with a bluestone patio, a curved stacked-limestone bench wall, planting beds, a mature oak, and a flagstone stepping path. How We Design

Three steps, start to finish.

01

Consult

We walk your property with you, measure what's there, and talk through how you actually use the outdoor space. One visit, no pressure, no pitch deck.

02

Draft

We draft a real site plan. Grading, hardscape, plant palette, irrigation, drainage, and how the whole thing reads across a decade of growth. You get the plan whether or not we build it.

03

Build

Our crews install what we drafted. Same foreman from start to finish, same warranty language in writing, and a walk-through before we pull off the property.

Selected Projects

Four jobs, drafted and built.

Ottawa Jefferson Street courtyard, a bluestone patio in running bond under a mature oak with dappled summer light, a low curved stacked limestone bench wall on the left, shade perennials and hostas in surrounding beds, a red-brick historic house visible at the edge of the frame.
Ottawa, IL · Summer 2025

Jefferson Street courtyard.

A historic Ottawa lot with a narrow side yard that the owners had given up on. We drafted a courtyard scheme built around one mature oak, with bluestone on a drainage base, a low wall bench in stacked limestone, and shade perennials underneath. Same courtyard hosts twenty people now.

Utica slope terrace, three tiers of dry-stacked Illinois limestone retaining walls built into a restored hillside, native prairie plantings in full autumn color with copper little bluestem, purple asters, and goldenrod, a white-sided detached garage at the edge of the frame, open Illinois Valley sky above.
Utica, IL · Fall 2025

Utica slope terrace.

Above-garage slope that lost four feet of topsoil the winter before we showed up. We drafted three tiered dry-stacked walls, regraded the pitch, and replanted with natives that hold soil. Two winters in, the terraces are intact and the plants are ahead of schedule.

Peru commercial entry, two parallel formal rows of clipped hornbeam hedge flanking a stamped-concrete walkway, a low Illinois limestone wall running along the base of each hedge, a mixed perennial bed with purple alliums, salvia, and catmint on the outside edges, a cream-stucco building with a dark standing-seam metal roof at the back.
Peru, IL · Spring 2025

Peru mall-corridor commercial entry.

Small commercial client on the 251 corridor wanted a redesigned entry that read as landscape, not decoration. We drafted a formal approach with a clipped hornbeam hedge, a low limestone wall, and perennials that carry color from May to frost. A project we still point at when a commercial prospect calls.

Marseilles riverfront, a reset bluestone patio with a single wood Adirondack chair in the foreground, a low dry-stacked Illinois fieldstone wall running across the mid-ground, a native buffer strip of switchgrass, cup plant, coneflower seed heads, and asters between the wall and the Illinois River, far-bank autumn trees in rust and orange across the water.
Marseilles, IL · Fall 2025

Marseilles riverfront rebuild.

Illinois River frontage with seasonal flooding and a patio that had shifted two inches toward the bank. We drafted a reset patio on a fresh base, added a native buffer strip on the river side, and built a low wall to hold the pitch. The buffer does the hydrology work, the wall does the visual work.

Services

Six things we draft and install.

Landscape Design

A full site plan for your property, not a template pulled off a shelf. Grading, plant palette, hardscape, drainage, and how it ages across a decade.

Hardscape

Patios, retaining walls, fire features, outdoor kitchens, walkways. ICPI-certified paver work we stand behind for the life of the install.

Plantings and Beds

Trees, shrubs, perennials, native restoration. Soil amendments included, because the soil is half the job.

Drainage and Grading

French drains, swale regrade, downspout routing. Boring work that keeps the fun work from failing five years in.

Maintenance Programs

Seasonal care tuned to the property we designed. Pruning calendar, bed refresh, mulch, and a spring walk-through with notes.

Seasonal Installations

Spring and fall clean-up, holiday lighting on mature trees, and bed edging. For properties that already have a plan in place.

What Homeowners Say

People who have lived with the plans we drafted.

Joe drafted a plan for our Ottawa courtyard that actually accounted for how the shade moves across the day. The crews installed it exactly how he drew it, and the oak looks like it was always supposed to be the centerpiece.

Karen R., Ottawa, 14 days ago

We had a failing slope above the garage for two years before we called Simmons. They came out once, drafted terraces, and were installing three weeks later. Two winters now and nothing has moved.

Dan M., Utica, 28 days ago

Good design-build is rare around here. Joe is genuinely a designer, not a salesperson, and the plan he drafted for our riverfront yard is the reason the flood did not take out the patio.

Spring consult season is live
We are booking design walks four and five weeks out across Ottawa, Utica, and Peru right now. If you want a plan drafted for a summer install, this is the window.

Bluestone versus concrete pavers
Both hold up in the Valley, but they age differently. Here is how we decide which one to specify on a given site.

Winter split three mature maples on one Ottawa property
If your yard has older trees, we can do a spring assessment before leaf-out. Broken leaders are easier to address in April than July.

A quick note on drainage
Most slope failures we see in the Valley are not a slope problem, they are a water routing problem. What we look for on a design walk.
